Club Bank Accounts

Hi folks. I turn to my fellow bowlers, with a very simple question. Can any of you recommend a bank or building society account, that pays interest, but doesn't charge a fee? I have spotted numerous Treasurer Accounts, that pay interest, but they do not allow direct debits. Ideally I need:

Allows direct debits

Allows cash to be paid in

Allows cheques to be paid in

Thank you, in advance, for your help. 😁

Hi Mark,

You will probably need to have two accounts depending on how much money your Club has.

One account for day to day banking, direct debits, cheques etc and a second account with another bank or building society that pays interest. For the latter there are a number of organisations that offer much higher interest and still covered by FSCS protection up to £85k.

Money can be instantly sent back from an Instant Access saver account to your current account when needed using online banking.

The second account can either be with Instant Access or a Fixed Rate over varying terms.

Hope this helps.

Skips in our sport?

I'm posting this thread just to see how other clubs go on, not as a criticism!

Most bowls clubs I visit when traveling around playing, dont seem to have any stucture regarding bringing players on through the ranks. Forty years ago, you would start as a lead, until you could confidently draw. But with dwindeling numbers in most bowls clubs, it seems out of necessity, skips are picked that have not served any form of apprenticeship learning how to draw. Many of our older members can remember that time, and regret the lack of good quality skips.

Without that knowledge, it brings in another question when a skip stands at the head, instruction? Few of the newer skips can build a head for attack, or defence, or give precise instrution. As part of their remit, they should understand what the bowls of their team members do, regard to swing.…

Hi folks. I agree in principle, with the 'earn your stripes' approach, but see that this approach is destined for failure. Given the drop in numbers of new bowlers, to bolster the number of players that play the front end, coupled with the need to have 'someone' as skip, what is the alternative, other than to put someone relatively new to the game, in as skip? I consider myself relatively new to the game. I've been bowling for 5 years and moved into the position of skip (on a regular basis) about 2.5 years ago. Was I ready for it? No. Was there a choice? Not really. I obviously had some skills over an above some more seasoned players, but it was needed in order to put out a team.

That said, I don't consider myself as a typical newbie. I had my nose in the rule book, and was keen to learn not only the rules, but the etiquette of the game. Now there's a real topic for discussion.

As for skills required:

Tactical thinker

Good Communicator

Raises Morale

I see so many skips that are very poor communicators. Talking with their head down to the head. Or speak softly, making it difficult to follow instructions.

Raising your game!.

Yesterday I had a very interesting and enjoyable game in the County Fours league. We played away, lost quite heavily, but I had an excellent game leading, I should explain a little more?

At 71, I'm a little like Aldi bananas, better yesterday than today. But because I try and specialise playing lead these days, I tend to get picked for most competitions that are going. 😍

Our club like many these days, is full of retired and old people, with an average age of around 65 I'd guess. However, the place we visited yesterday has invested in youth, and is now the best club for Internationals, National, and County players, in our region.

I played against a young chap in his 30s, National player and not only a very good bowler, but a really nice guy. We had some great banter, and I'd like to say I matched him…

Aero Defiance bowls.

Does anyone use these bowls please? I'm about to buy a set, but unsure of the bias. I want a bowls for lead/front end play, thats similar to a Blaze, or VS or D-Tec. So anyone with a set, please let me know ASAP please?

Thanks all. Richard.

Personally never seen anyone with these bowls Richard sorry. From the Aero website they seem to be part of the range of bowls they market at the NZ/Aus as opposed to the international market. It’s the widest line from that range but hard to compare against the more common Groove and Sonic range we see more commonly here.
