Collecting stats about individual performance in a game is hard to justify at the amateur level. Using those stats to somehow punish players on selection is worse, not least for the affect it will have on your club atmosphere.
How does lovebowls differ
Stats in lovebowls are not designed like that at all. The data collected by the stats module are:
The number of matches for which you make yourself Available.
The number of matches you are eligible (based on age or gender)
The number of times you are selected to play or picked as a reserve and the position you played.
The number of times you were withdrawn from a match squad after being selected (whether this is recorded is at the selectors discretion)
The number of matches you were marked as “away” meaning you were not available for selection.
If and only if individual rink scores are recorded after the match will stats for Won, Lost or Drew be collected.
These figures are then passed though a formula that indicates how reasonable it would be for each member to be selected for the match being viewed. This highlights clearly for example when one member might have played every one of the last three games, whilst another wasn’t selected despite being available.
The key point is that the statistics collected are focused on tracking members' enthusiasm and commitment to the club, rather than their individual skill or performance. The data is intended to help ensure fair and transparent team selection processes, not to create a competitive environment or punish players.
This information can then be used by the club's selectors to identify members who may be deserving of more playing time, or to highlight any potential imbalances in the selection process. The goal is to promote fairness and inclusivity, not to create divisions or resentment among members.
There is often a certain amount of grumbling during the season regarding the rights and wrongs of selection and most of the time it’s just banter. Using the lovebowls stats during selection is hopefully a tool your club can use to prevent those niggles turning into anything more.
